Monitoring anti-freeze in cooling water systems
Cool Gauge Ltd co-founder Brian Smeeton introduces the Cool Gauge RT-100.
Anti-freeze formulations – or heat transfer fluid (HTF) used in low temperature chilled applications are fundamental to proper system operation. They play a vital role in the production processes of many manufacturing industries. However, the simplicity of the HTF’s primary task – to protect the system from freezing solid – often means the true value of the humble HTF is misunderstood and possibly underestimated. This oversight can lead to costly damage, lost production, increased operating costs, the expense of replacement HTF costs and of course, environmental concerns if leaks go to drains or waterways etc.
Pipework bursts due to freezing through low HTF levels are usually dramatic in nature and the resultant problems are very apparent very quickly. However, there may be more insidious problems lurking which are just as destructive and costly in the long run. Many cooling systems are constructed from various metals, which means they are prone to galvanic corrosion that can eventually lead to metal failure. In the meantime the solids and associated sludge accumulation from the corrosion debris can lead to blocked filters, restricted pipe flow or blockages – especially in small-bore pipework and of course any plate heat exchangers… Read More On ACR News
